For the first time in this blog’s history, I had to use a translator to write about a song. I don’t speak French, but that doesn’t mean I’m new to music in French. A few artists already live in my library that I dig quite a lot: indietronica/electropop acts like L'Impératrice and Paradis, as well as some darker ones like La Femme.
Muddy Monk, a Swiss indie pop singer-songwriter, is a new discovery for me—but I’ve quickly built a strong connection to his work. I’d go as far as to say this song is on its way to becoming a part of my “one-click-away” loved songs list. It’s like a pill I can carry in my pocket, ready to ease the burden off my shoulders whenever I need it.
"Chaki Queen" is a smoothly flowing track, vibing with catchy, intriguing melodies. The opening beat and sample almost trick you into thinking you’re listening to a kid playing with a cheap plastic synthesizer toy. But as the song unfolds, you realize just how much power its simplicity lends to the piece. By the end, you’re nodding your head throughout the track’s entire length, only to wish it lasted longer.
Lyrically, the song praises self-worth and the power of seeing oneself through the eyes of someone who loves you unconditionally. Knowing that the song’s theme aligns closely with thoughts I often have makes the bond with it feel even stronger.
By the time I finished writing this review, I realized I still don’t fully understand what the phrase "Chaki Queen" actually means. But maybe that’s okay—it’s nice to live with a bit of mystery sometimes.
I’ve added this song to IndieWave FM’s playlist Bedroom Dream Pop. Make sure to check it out!
