“For Love” isn’t trying to turn romance into something glossy or perfect. It feels more like a small, honest snapshot of two people choosing each other, told through reflective singer-songwriter storytelling and a gently cinematic indie folk sound.
Northfield describes his wider work as rooted in the nostalgia of late 90s and early 2000s indie rock, while searching for meaning through creativity. Here, though, he keeps things simple and personal. A song made for one very specific moment in two people’s lives, but one that can easily mean something to everyone else listening too.
“For Love” has also found its place in one of IndieWave FM’s playlists.
Personal stories always touch me a little more, and “For Love” comes with a particularly lovely one. Toronto-based artist Nate Northfield wrote the song to commemorate his sister and her husband’s relationship at their wedding. That context alone makes it feel intimate before you even get into the music.
And the music fits the story beautifully. There’s something very Bon Iver-like in its atmosphere, but what I probably like most is that it doesn’t feel overly polished. There’s dirtiness around the edges, moments that feel almost raw and slightly edgy, yet somehow that only makes the warmth of the song come through more naturally.
