"So Long, Good Time” is a single from the second full-length album by NYC indie rock group The Morning Herald. The band’s career started relatively recently—during the pandemic—but given their sold-out gigs and steady productivity, it’s fair to say they’re progressively making their mark.
The band’s range of inspirations is quite extensive. The instrumental sections echo the sounds of various modern neo-psychedelia and synthpop acts such as Tame Impala and MGMT. The anthemic energy occasionally leans toward more upbeat, high-energy bands like The Naked and Famous or Kasabian.
Vocally, where some of their other records showcased Alex Turner-like stylings, this single morphs into something closer to Kevin Parker’s softer, dreamier delivery.
Thematically, it’s a heartfelt breakup song. But don’t let that description diminish its mood. It’s an uplifting, modern-day synthpop track that, by the way, is impressively well-produced.
My opinion of the song didn’t change even after several listens—it’s the kind of track that’s hard to get tired of if you’re into this genre. It offers everything a modern indie lover might need. While it does sound a bit too reminiscent of other bands at times, sometimes getting hooked on the right vibe is all you’re looking for.
The song is now featured on IndieWave FM’s Laid-Back Indie Rock playlist.
